Sonophoresis is the use of ultrasound to deliver metabolically active ingredients transdermally through your skin. Sonophoresis uses a lower frequency ultrasound (approximately 20 kHz) than is employed in the treatment of tissue injuries (approximately 3 MHz)
Sonophoresis creates small openings between your epithelial cells which allow the passage of ingredients that could not normally transverse your skin’s cells. Ultrasound also temporarily reduces the integrity of the lipid barrier functions of your skin cells which also enhances drug/nutrient delivery. Additionally the ultrasonic energy increases the kinetic energy of the substance to be delivered again enhancing transdermal transport. These mechanisms allow for enhanced penetration of active ingredients deep into your dermis where they are vital for skin health.
Sonophoresis can be used by itself or in combination with other therapies (peels, facials, microdermabrasion, and iontophoresis) as an aesthetic procedure to treat various skin conditions. Depending on which products are being used in your treatment, metabolically active ingredients are able to penetrate into the deep layers for the remediation of skin aging, dehydrated skin, dry skin, photodamaged skin, hyperpigmentation problems, uneven skin and acne.
